Gommerlauf Oberwald (Switzerland) 2012
On February 25th and 26th 2012, the Gommerlauf takes place. The race is one of the biggest popular cross-country skiing races in Switzerland and is part of the Euroloppet series for the 3rd time.
The location
The community Oberwald is in the district of Goms in the eastern part of the canton Wallis and has only got 273 inhabitants. Oberwald is the last community in the valley of Goms and is at the bottom of the Alpine passes Furka and Grimsel. The upper part of the valley of Oberwallis between the spring of the Rhône and the valley of Grengiols near Brig is called Goms. On an altitude of nearly 1400 meters above sea level, snow is guaranteed. Therefore, more than 100 km of slopes are available for cross-country skiers.
The race
More than 1000 participants arrive at the finish of the 25 km race of the Gommerlauf. The track goes from Blitzingen with short ascents and descents up to the 100 meters altitude higher Oberwald. The race is held in the free technique. Additionally, a race in the classic technique is offered at the same track.
